Adiron Dack Camp Expansion

ADIRONDACK CAMP EXPANSION

Challenge - the client’s self built cabin prior to renovation was extremely small with access to the sleeping space up a steep and uncomfortable stair. The clients are aging and their family has expanded to include a son-in-law and new grandchild. They needed a practical expansion that worked both when the whole family was visiting and when it was just the two of them.

Solution - Being that the cabin is entirely off-grid it was important to be able to use the spaces as efficiently as possible regardless of whether one or two couples are in residency but to also have shared space for being together. The approach to the design established essentially two separate sleeping rooms with independent heating and plumbing with a shared screen porch which features a large sliding door which opens the space of the kitchen and common rooms to the screen porch. The bedrooms are located in a separate wing for one couple while the primary couple has rooms above the common areas. It was important to the client to utilize similar materials to their original home so we used the “brainstorm” siding that is typically used in the Adirondacks with a more modern board and batten detail.
